In this introduction of Naked Economics by Charles Wheelan, he brings up many various issues, that do affect my life, and some that don't. It surprised me how many factual anecdotes and issues he throws at the reader to keep them interested and intrigued. Throughout the introduction, Wheelan makes some great points that will shed some light on the way the American economy works.
For example, Wheelan brought up the fact that the 2008 financial crisis was the worst financial crisis since the 1939 Great Depression, this affected me and kept me interested in learning more about it. It affected me because the whole global economy had gone down, so therefore everyone in the world was impacted by it. Another issue Wheelan brings up is the issue of health care insurance and whether new mothers should be able to stay in the hospital for two days, even though they only are required to stay overnight for a night. Our former President Clinton vowed to end "drive-by deliveries", Wheelan goes into detail as to why, how, and what would happen should Clinton pursue this wish. While that issue doesn't affect me personally, it affects my country and how much money I will eventually have to pay in taxes so new mothers don't have to have a "drive-by delivery".
One of the few issues brought up that doesn't affect me is the issue with France back in 2000 when they were struggling with employment. The Socialist French government devised a plan to fix the unemployment rates by cutting the the maximum hours of the work week for employers. I don't live in France, therefore I'm not affected by their unemployment struggles.
Although I wasn't affected by the French unemployment rates, I was affected by the 2008 financial crisis and in the future when I am a tax payer, I will be affected by the health insurance issue.
I agree with most of your statements. Although the French unemployment doesn't affect us directly, the point that he showed on the US that it had created millions of new jobs through new technology (Internet) does. Because maybe in the future we will work in this field and also the economy has grown a lot through new technology (production, jobs etc.).
